A fitness for duty evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted to determine if an employee is physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of performing essential job functions, particularly in consideration of psychological or psychiatric conditions. This evaluation is designed to ensure that employees are fit to safely and effectively carry out their job responsibilities.

During a fitness for duty evaluation, assessments such as medical history review, physical examination, psychological or psychiatric evaluation, functional capacity evaluation (FCE), job-specific testing, and drug and alcohol testing may be conducted to determine an employee's fitness for work and ability to perform their job safely and effectively.
